Detlef F. Sprinz is Senior Scientist at PIK—Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany, a Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and Research Affiliate at ESSCA School of Management, Angers, France.  During 2024-2025, he will lead the project “AMaReNa - A Market for the Restoration of Nature” which focuses on carbon removals.

His areas of research and publications encompass climate policy at various levels, long-term policy, inter/national institutions & the evaluation of their performance, European & international environmental policy, and modeling political decisions.  He served as guest editor of the special issue of Global Environmental Politics on “Long-term Environmental Policy” (2009), co-editor of International Relations and Global Climate Change (The MIT Press, 2001), Models, Numbers, and Cases: Methods for Studying International Relations (The University of Michigan Press, 2004), and Global Climate Policy - Actors, Concepts, and Enduring Challenges (The MIT Press, 2018) - in addition to numerous journal articles.  As a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group III, he co-authored chapter 14 on “international cooperation.”

Detlef F. Sprinz is Senior Scientist at PIK—Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany, a Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and Research Affiliate at ESSCA School of Management, Angers, France.  During 2024-2025, he will lead the project “AMaReNa - A Market for the Restoration of Nature” which focuses on carbonremovals.

He received a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, as well as a M.A. (“Diplom-Volkswirt”) in Economics from the University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany.  He coordinated a research group at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Centre for Global Cooperation Research, located at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, on credible commitment to long-term policy from January-August 2017.  During the academic year 2017-18, Detlef Sprinz served as Rice Faculty Fellow & Visiting Professor in the European Studies Council, Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies, the Department of Political Science, and the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (now: Yale School of the Environment), Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA.  During 2020-2022, he held a Tandem Fellowship by the German Stifterverband to create a course on “Sustainable and Collaborative Decision-Making in Business and Politics – An Interdisciplinary and Prediction-Based Course,” and during 2022-20233, he was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Lund, Lund, Sweden.

Detlef Sprinz has taught international relations, international environmental policy, and social science methodology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA; the University of Oslo, Norway; the University of Potsdam, Germany; in the joint MA program in International Relations (MAIB) of the Free University Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, and the University of Potsdam; in the Master of Public Management (MPM) program of the University of Potsdam, as well at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

During 2009-2012, Detlef Sprinz served as Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen, Denmark.  He was a member of the International Advisory Committee of MILEN—Environmental Change and Sustainable Energy, University of Oslo, Norway (2010-2013), and a Senior Research Fellow at CICERO—Center for International Climate and Environmental Research—Oslo, Norway (2011-2013).  Detlef Sprinz is a member of the European Academy, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany; co-founded Ecologic Institute; and provides consultancy services to companies, governments, international institutions, research institutes, and think tanks.  He also serves on a range of advisory boards of national, European, and international projects, journals, and institutions.
